In today’s post I just want to talk about the amazing qualities of God, which makes Him the one Person we can truly rely on with all of our heart. In a previous post I referred to 1 Corinthians 13, speaking about some of the characteristics of love. The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8), so every quality describing love also describes God.
God will never rush you – He is patient at all times. He will never be jealous of you or treat you unkindly. God is not self-seeking, so His thoughts are about you! He will never hold a grudge and act resentful towards you – and He never remembers or brings up the past.
God is strong enough to bear up under anything that comes His way – He will never desert you. He does not wait for you to make a mistake or see the worst in your actions – He only believes the best of you. His positivity towards you makes Him full of hope under all circumstances.
God can never fail or come to an end. Your companionship with Him will last forever. He is completely trustworthy, without human limitations or failures. His love is perfect, and all of His love is directed at you.
We have already established that God IS love. He does not just give love, He embodies it.
“…and [then] the God of love [Who is the Source of affection, goodwill, love, and benevolence toward men] and the Author and Promoter of peace will be with you.” 2 Cor 13:11
“God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God…” 1 John 4:16
If God IS love, it makes sense that any description of love will be a description of God. Realizing this, I want to highlight some more characteristics of God according to 1 Cor 13. Each time I will substitute the word ‘Love’ with ‘God’:
- God endures long and is patient and kind; (v.4)
- God is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly; (v.5)
- God is not touchy or fretful or resentful; (v.5)
- God takes no account of the evil done to Him; (v.5)
- God does not rejoice at injustice; (v.6)
- God bears up under anything and everything that comes; (v.7)
- God is ever ready to believe the best of every person; (v.7)
- God never fails (v.8)
All these promises are true and find their answer in Jesus! This revelation suddenly puts many misconceptions about God in a different perspective! God is amazing. He is always better than we can imagine Him to be.
Last night we spoke about God’s love being so perfect that it drives away all fear. The more we get to know His character, the more we will trust Him. I want to add to this tonight by saying that we can trust Him to fulfill every promise He has ever made. As humans we may many times make promises without fulfilling them – but God does not operate like this. He is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19).
“For I have said, Mercy and loving-kindness shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness will You establish in the very heavens [unchangeable and perceptual].” Ps 89:2
“…And your faithfulness is round about You [an essential part of You at all times}.” Ps 89:8
So, without His faithfulness God wouldn’t be God. It is an unchanging aspect of His character. That is incredible to know! Furthermore we are told:
“For as many as are the promises of God, they all find their Yes in Him [Christ]. ” 2 Cor 1:20
This verse clearly states that every promise God made in the Bible is fulfilled in Christ. They find their Yes (answer) in the work He did on the cross. That means, as one of many examples, if God swore He will never be angry at us again (Is 54:9), this is the truth. Our righteousness and perfection in God’s eyes is made possible by the redeeming work of Jesus. The same way every other promise of God is fulfilled in Jesus – you can trust Him.
“So shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it shall not return to Me void [without producing any effect, useless], but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” Is 55:11
If we walk around with fear in our hearts, we have not become fully acquainted with the true character of God. This fear includes fear of punishment, fear of sickness, fear of death – any fear you can think of. It basically says: “I don’t really know if God loves me enough to heal me or bless me”, or “He is going to punish me for what I have done”.
We must learn the truth regarding the character and heart of God. God IS love (1 John 4:16). He does not just give love, He embodies it. His entire being is love – there is no evil in Him (1 John 1:5). If we really get to know God, we will start trusting in His goodness – and this will become the rock that we stand on.
“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection].” 1 John 4:18
Getting to know God, who is perfect love, will automatically drive away all fears you have in you heart. If you know your closest friend’s heart, you will know that they don’t want to hurt you. You won’t fear them. It is the same with God. If we get to know Him as a Father, we will know He loves us and we will never fear Him or what He will do to us.
